Our Vision
- Empower women of all ages, hailing from economically disadvantaged communities of Sri Lanka, by providing financial aid for education and support for business activity, so that they may achieve their full potential and have access to better opportunities, with the ultimate goal of escaping the poverty trap and live with dignity.
Our Mission
- To bring positive changes to the most disadvantaged children in Sri Lanka by channeling resources provided by the people of Australia.
- Uplifting the spirit and hope of the people from penurious rural communities in Sri Lanka, by elevating them from poverty into prosperity, primarily through women empowerment.
Our Objectives
- Provide financial aid for sponsorship of female children living in "Thilagavathiyar Girls Home," (TGH) located in Palugamam – Batticaloa in Sri Lanka.
- Provide funds for maintenance and development of TGH.
- Conduct online, tutoring classes called ‘e-Kalvi Program’ during after-school hours to all the children at TGH to assist in their learning.
- Provide financial aid as scholarships to academically gifted, high-school, female students through the "Higher Education Scholarship Program." These are children who live in their family homes and wish to pursue their secondary school education by attending the nearby government public schools.
- Provide financial aid as scholarships, to academically gifted female, university students, who have gained entrance to various undergraduate degree programs in various Sri Lankan Universities through the "University Scholarship Program".
- To facilitate Australian people, especially of Sri Lankan origin, to sponsor a child in Sri Lanka and to assist to create a bond with the sponsored child or youth.
- To be accountable to Members by providing feedback on the progress made by their sponsored child or youth and a quarterly account of the disbursement of funds received.
- To work with the Charitable Organisations in Sri Lanka to implement special projects to enhance the life of the children under their care.
Why Mahalir Illam?
Mahalir Illam is a Charity set up in the state of New South Wales in Australia by a small group of dedicated service minded individuals to specifically address the welfare needs of orphaned girls in Sri Lanka by collaborating with the grassroots charitable organisations in that country.
- Our committee consists of a group of individuals with a wide range of professional backgrounds, who are willing to serve the Charity and guide its direction for the future.
- We work collaboratively and effectively to utilize the sponsorship contribution and other donations received into Mahalir Illam to fund small projects benefiting all sponsored children within a short time frame.
- We understand the importance of working towards our objectives, our goal is to create and seize upon opportunities to improve living standards and make a difference.
- We provide regular information and updates to our members regarding the sponsorship programs and progress on projects undertaken by Mahalir Illam.
- We encourage sponsors to establish a link with the sponsored child through letters and visits.
- We are committed to accountability and adhere to our commitment to use every dollar received in donation for the intended beneficiaries with zero overhead costs.
- Our committee consists of a devoted team of fifteen volunteers.
