Revolving Loan Program

The ‘Revolving Loan Program’ is one of Mahalirillam’s key women’s empowerment initiatives. The revolving nature of the loan allows funds repaid by the women who received loans for economic activities to be reused for new loans to support other women in starting their own businesses. This program is funded by Mahalirillam and implemented at the grassroots level by SWO. SWO identifies eligible recipients and provides interest-free, small loans of Rs 40,000 (approximately AU$170) with a one-year repayment period.

53 families obtained Revolving Loans from Social Welfare Organization/Mahalirillam during the fiscal year 22/23. On August 28, 2023, the loan payment was made to three women-headed homes in Arayampathy Divisional Secretariat, Batticaloa.

Launched in 2021 the project has so far disbursed Rs 2,900,000 in loans, benefitting 103 families. The SWO monitors and manages both the disbursement and repayment processes, demonstrating a compassionate understanding of any challenges that may arise during the repayment period.

Mahalirillam continues to fund the Social Welfare Organisation (SWO) Batticaloa to manage the Revolving Loan Program, which provides interest-free loans of Rs. 40,000 to women-headed families. These women, often the primary earners in their households, use the loans to start or expand small businesses.

On 29 August 2025, SWO provided revolving loan assistance to 12 beneficiary families (see photos attached) from the Kirankulam Central and Kirankulam North Village Officer Divisions under the Ariyampathy Divisional Secretariat. Each family received Rs. 40,000, totaling Rs. 480,000 in financial support for self-employment and livelihood development.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our member from Knox Family Law Specialist, Victoria for their continued financial support of this initiative, which enables us to uplift families and strengthen community self-reliance.
